Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
